Couch Surfing in New York City

A journey of a million miles begins with a single step, according to a Chinese proverb. For us, the beginning of our year-long trip around the world starts with a trip around the corner. After packing up all our belongings into a 7' x 10' storage unit, Jared and I are staying at our friend Maria's place, only three blocks away from our old home.

It feels strange to be rootless in my own city. Yesterday I wandered around Manhattan on a Friday afternoon, feeling like I was playing hooky. With no job and no apartment, I literally had nowhere to go, nowhere I had to be. My head was spinning, thinking about the chapter in my life that is ending and the chapter that is about to start.

Tonight is our going away party, then I have two more days to say goodbye to my beloved New York. On Tuesday, October 2, I'll travel to my hometown to spend time with my family in West Palm Beach, Florida. Jared joins me there on October 9, then on October 11 we'll fly from Miami to Quito, Ecuador.

We hope you'll follow along on what is sure to be the adventure of a lifetime.
